Bacteriophages and their relationship with CRISPR-Cas and other defense systems in bacteria

Summary

Our group of computational biology is interested in the annotation and analysis of complete genomes, with special focus on the study of bacterial pangenomes. We are particularly interested in the analysis of the relationship between bacteriophages and bacteria, and the defense and anti-defense systems they use in their constant warfare. In this context, the study of CRISPR-Cas bacterial immune systems, and how these expand and distribute depending on the environment, is currently one of our main lines of research.
Working hypothesis on the acquisition of CRISPR-Cas systems proposed in Rubio et al., Sci. Adv. (2023).

In the field of rare diseases, we are also interested in studying the rare disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and are working on the search for modifier genes and drugs that increase the amount of the SMN protein, the lack of which causes the disease.
