Climate change is the greatest biosocial crisis of our time: it accelerates biodiversity loss, undermines food and health security, and multiplies extreme events that affect communities unevenly.
Science is a key tool to mitigate the problem, and at CABD part of our research programs focus on the biodegradation of toxic compounds and plastics, as well as soil bioremediation, offering practical solutions to restore ecosystems and, in doing so, strengthen socio-environmental resilience.
But this problem cannot be solved by science alone: it requires individual commitment and cooperative action that entails transforming how we produce, consume, and manage resources within our institutions.
With this aim, the CABD Sustainability Commission (SC) was created, grounded in three basic principles: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Committed to the scientific excellence that characterizes us, the CABD SC seeks plans for our institute—and that may help others—that optimize resource use, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as well as European and Andalusian guidelines.
Our main objectives for the coming years focus on responsible waste management, energy optimization, sustainable water use, expanding the dialogue with the companies we work with and our collaborators to find joint solutions, and last but not least, organizing training for all CABD staff in best practices.
