The CABD EDI Committee aims to continue advancing gender equality while fostering an inclusive work environment and promoting equity across all aspects of the professional setting.
Gender inequality continues to impact both social and professional spheres globally, especially in science and research careers. Women are underrepresented at higher levels, often leaving the profession due to social, cultural, and institutional barriers, not lack of skill or potential. The data from the Andalusian Centre for Developmental Biology exemplifies this disparity (women represent approximately 71% of the administrative and technical personnel, 46,6% of the pre-doctoral staff, 52% of the post-doctoral staff, 52% senior researchers and 18,5% of all principal investigators). Addressing these biases is essential to reduce societal harm and foster more inclusive, equitable scientific advancement. In addition, we believe that recognising and valuing people’s diverse backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experiences is essential to avoid underrepresentation and marginalization. We will, therefore, actively work to improve conditions for disadvantaged groups, thereby fostering greater diversity and inclusion in our centre.
As a public institution comprising Universidad Pablo de Olavide, CSIC, and the Junta de Andalucía, we will work closely and co-ordinately with the Office for Equality at Universidad Pablo de Olavide and the ‘Comisión Mujeres y Ciencia’ at CSIC to maximize the use of available programs and resources. Since CABD is recognized as an excellence María de Maeztu unit and is part of the Sommas network, we are all members of its Working Group of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
