The 'Including in Science' project brings scientific knowledge closer to vulnerable groups
published on 25/10/2024

The project has a duration of 1 year and has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with the aim of disseminating science among vulnerable groups.

The project 'Including in Science', an initiative of the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology (CABD), a joint center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the University Pablo de Olavide (UPO) and the Andalusian Government, was funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

The FECYT's program of “aids for the promotion of scientific, technological and innovation culture” has positively evaluated the CABD's proposal focused on the dissemination of developmental biology. Through scientific workshops and guided visits to the facilities of this center, participants are introduced to molecular concepts of DNA and the life cycle of model organisms used in the studies carried out at the CABD.

In a fun and entertaining way, the experts try to bring science outreach to different groups: children from child protection centers in collaboration with the NGO “Crecer con futuro” and the Asociación de Familias de Acogida y Colaboradoras “Abrázame”; young people of gypsy ethnicity participating in the “Escuela de Verano de la Asociación Gitana Vencedores” and people over 55 years of age from towns in the province through the “Aula de Mayores de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide”.

The team behind these activities includes research staff from the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology, who have extensive experience in scientific outreach activities. These six people participate every year in events such as the Science Fair, the European Researchers' Night or the guided tours that take place every week at the CABD. “Many of the people we meet in the workshops arrive reluctant, but little by little they become infected by our enthusiasm for science and we see their interest and curiosity grow experience after experience,” say the team members. “We always end up with a great satisfaction for the great response that these groups give and the gratitude that many of these people express when they see that someone pays them the necessary attention so that they understand what we are telling them. We must encourage this type of activities from public institutions” concludes the team.
