On January 23, the Universidad Pablo de Olavide celebrated an event dedicated to recognizing the work and contribution of the university community.
This was a day of recognition of the research work of its PDI, as well as the teaching and management activity carried out by its faculty and its technical and administrative staff (PTGAS).
Presided over by the Rector Francisco Oliva Blázquez, the University Day is celebrated to coincide with the birth of Pablo de Olavide y Jáuregui on January 25, 300 years ago in Lima, after whom the institution is named. The rector was accompanied by José Ignacio García Pérez, rector of the International University of Andalusia; Vicente Martín González, president of the Social Council of the UPO; Laura López de la Cruz, vice-rector of Institutional Relations, Lifelong Learning and Foundations; and Silvia Mendoza Calderón, general secretary of the University.
On the Day that celebrates its existence, the Pablo de Olavide University has highlighted the achievements of three teams of researchers “committed to carrying out advances in knowledge and science, always for the benefit of society,” in the words of the rector. Research work “that distinguishes Spanish public universities, which apply the Humboldtian principle that without teaching and research there is no university,” said Francisco Oliva.

This research group of the Pablo de Olavide University, which develops its work at the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology (a joint center of CSIC, UPO and the Andalusian Regional Government), is an international reference in the search for therapies for rare diseases. It applies the work method based on personalized precision medicine in the MITOCURE project (focused on mitochondrial diseases), MYOCURE (focused on congenital myopathies), BRAINCURE (focused on neurodegeneration due to iron accumulation and demyelinating diseases) and CANCERCURE (focused on the search for personalized treatments for genetic susceptibility to cancer), offering new therapeutic approaches to patients who until now only had palliative treatments.
