On October 18th, during the meeting of the 30th anniversary of the SEBD, Darío Lupiáñez, cientifico titular scientist at the CSIC and researcher at the CABD, was awarded the prize for scientific excellence in Developmental Biology. Darío tells us that “although the award is individual, in reality it is a recognition of the trajectory of his group, extensive to all its past and present members”. Without forgetting the importance of the funding agencies of the ideas of his group as well as his host institution, the CABD, a mixed center funded by the CSIC, UPO and Junta de Andalucía. This award recognizes the research of Darío and his group in the field of three-dimensional genome structure during embryonic development. In the past, his group has provided several examples showing that changes in the three-dimensional structure of the genome can cause human disease but can also serve as a driver for evolution by mediating the adaptation of new adaptive phenotypes. For Dario it is “undoubtedly a source of pride to receive this award because it is given by our own professional peers, who recognize my work and achievements and this is really the best”. On the other hand, the award is also named after José Luis Gómez Skarmeta who “was a pioneer in applying new genomic techniques for the study of developmental and evolutionary biology processes”. Darío recalls that José Luis was also part of the CABD, "he was a very generous and collaborative person and that this award also helps us to remember his memory and to transmit all these important values to the new generations". Darío Lupiañez has an exceptional scientific career that has included a 10-year stay in Berlin (Germany) where he worked at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Genetics and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine. Already in 2022 he obtained a grant of two million euros from the European Research Council, a key support to face his current research. And for the last year he has been carrying out his research with his group in Seville at the CABD.
