CABD

Centro Andaluz de Biología del Desarrollo

Seville, Spain

Who are we?

The CABD was created in 2003 as the first Developmental Biology Institute in Spain. In 2017 the Department of Gene Regulation and Morphogenesis received a Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence award for the 2017-2021 period that has been renewed for the whole CABD during the 2022-2026 period.

The centre is jointly funded by the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), the Andalusian Regional Government Junta de Andalucia and the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO) in Seville. The building and its equipment were acquired with EU funds.

Besides the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO), there are two other public universities in Seville, the US and the UNIA and several biomedical research centres like CABIMER, IBIS and CIC Cartuja, with which we have colaborative links.

Thanks to the María de Maeztu accreditation, the centre is still expanding, (see job offers) and this initiative aims to attract Spanish and foreign researchers to the beautiful city of Seville.

To encourage the formation of an international community, the main seminars are held in English and the working language is English.

Research groups

The emphasis is made on Developmental Biology to take advantage of the strong Spanish school that has spread around the world. The Centre now houses young and dynamic groups working on mouse, zebra fish, Xenopus, Drosophila and Caenorhabditis development. The CABD also houses groups studying control of cell cycle in yeast, regulation of gene expression in bacteria and oxidative stress. (Statement on the use of research animals).
